History
In 1838, the French chemist Anselme Payen discovered Cellulose. He isolated cellulose from plant matter and determined its chemical formula. In 1870, Cellulose was used to produce the first successful thermoplastic polymer, celluloid by Hyatt Manufacturing Company. In 1920, Hermann Staudinger determined Cellulose's polymer structure, and in 1922, Cellulose was first chemically synthesized by Kobayashi and Shoda.
